Gladiator Maximum Talbotus brought glory to the city of Pittsburgh and made his Emperor (Mario Lemieux) very happy – not to mention all the other Penguin fans.
Coming back from a broken foot, Max made his parents, who were in the stands, very happy too when he scored the game winning goal against the Invaders from the East, better known as the Philadelphia Flyers.
Playing on the fourth line with Scary Gary Roberts and Big Georges Laraque, Max made the most of the opportunity when the puck came his way in front of Biron. He drove it home and Max created his very own Kodak moment. Maybe having my daughter, Jen, contribute a column brought him good luck. After all, he is Jen’s favorite player!
The team concept stayed intact for the Pens as the other goals came from the sticks of Crosby, Hossa and Staal. Everyone chipped in as the Flyers got a little more chippy and began playing their style of rock ‘em sock ‘em hockey. But the Pens gave as good as they got, especially when the little Tiger,Tyler Kennedy, took on Scottie Upshall and gave him what for!
After the “no goal” call, the team kept its composure, didn’t let it get to them, and kept on fighting. The result is the Gladiators from Pittsburgh trek to the other end of Pennsylvania for games three and four in the faraway land of orange and black. Being up two games will help their confidence in the City of Brotherly Love, where there won’t be much love lost between these guys. Each will want to throw the others to the lions.
To honor Max, I suggest a maximum donut – maybe a crueler or a big cinnamon roll!
Has it been there all along and I just noticed tonight? That sign on the ice at the Igloo that says: Dunkin’ Donuts?? Maybe it’s subliminal advertising at its best and what helped me come up with our donut theme!
Mario’s private box was packed with sportsmen tonight. Baseball pitchers Tom Glavine and John Smoltz were watching and Big Ben from the Steelers visited again. The best story of the evening was the one about John Challis, an 18-year-old from Freedom, PA who is suffering from terminal liver cancer. His glee at meeting all those guys in Mario’s box was apparent when he talked with Christine Simpson and his life affirming positive attitude is a model for everyone. DETROIT DALLIES WITH DALLAS
Except for the fireworks at the end of the game, the Stars are looking like a team with little passion. Maybe that multiple overtime game against San Jose and playing a tough seven game series sucked all the life out of them. They didn’t look very inspired as the Wings, even without Franzen, easily won the game. Let’s hope the home cookin’ in Dallas gives them a boost as does playing in front of their home crowd.
C’mon, Dallas, give them a series!
