Hockey n' Heels Event– Pittsburgh Penguins
Where: Mellon Arena, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins
When: Wednesday November 7th 2007
Who: Maureen came all the way from Colorado. Freelance writer and Hockey & High Heels columnist, Jan Snyder flew in from Houston. The Pittsburgh Penguins first ever Hockey n’ Heels event attracted a great variety of female hockey fans, from new to diehard. And let me tell you, Pittsburgh is just as much Hockey Town as it is football town! I had the pleasure of meeting 88 female hockey fans full of passion for this great game, and for this exciting team.
Behind the Scenes Tour of Mellon Arena
Guests were divided in two groups for a tour of this classic NHL arena. The women had a chance to see the press box, the Igloo Lounge, Fox Sports Net production room, the Zamboni Corral, the wives and family room, media offices and the Pens Patrol staging area. We won’t have Mellon Arena for too much longer, as the Penguins new “Igloo” will be completed in a few years. I personally recommend NHL enthusiast to make a trip to see a game at Mellon Arena before it’s too late.
Hockey Panel With Newlin Archinal, Sonni Abbata,
Alison Morris, Janelle Hall and Lisa Ovens
Much was discussed over the two panel sessions; playing hockey, being taken seriously as a hockey fan, the joys of converting husbands into hockey fans, the impact and perceptions surrounding hitting in women’s hockey, questions about why sports media doesn’t present more on women’s sport. The group of us, comprised of plenty of mothers and daughters, female hockey players (and one female football player from the Pittsburgh Passion!), seasoned hockey loving grandmas, new fans and die-hard fans ensured we had every kind of view on the game, from being a fan to a hockey mom to a hockey player.
We made the trek up to the top of Mellon Arena to the Club Section. There to greet us were professional and friendly staff, delicious food (the chocolate cake, MY God that cake – delicious!) an attractive Penguins gift box filled with goodies under each seat, and of course, a fantastic view of the ice!
The Game Philadelphia Flyers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
For me, it was the first time I saw Sidney Crosby play live. He tallied one assist in the 3-1 loss to the Flyers. For the Penguins, it marked the end of their eight game win streak against the Flyers. So the girls of Hockey N Heels didn’t get the win, it was still a fabulous evening!
Throughout the game, I signed books for the gang, and it was such a pleasure to speak with everyone individually. After touring around the city earlier that day, I was blown away by the sports fever in Pittsburgh. I was even more blown away by the committed and dedicated female hockey fans attending Hockey & Heels that evening. It was a treat to meet you all on the Penguins home turf!
It was awesome to meet Newlin, Sonny, Janelle, and Alison. Thank you for taking the time at the end of your long day working in news media to participate in the event. A big cheer for all of you…Woohoo!
Jan Snyder, it was great to meet up with you in your hometown, and hear more of your fabulous hockey stories surrounding your love of all things Penguin. I am glad many of the women who read your column on Hockeyandhighheels.com had the chance to meet and talk hockey with you!
Many thanks to Penguins Director of Marketing, Ross Miller and Vice President of Sales and Marketing, David Soltesz for green lighting and supporting such a fabulous hockey event!
Penguins Marketing Manager, Sarah Swartz, your planning and work put into the Penguins first Hockey & Heels event gave us all a great hockey memory we won’t forget. This event connected everyone to the game and to each other. Not everyone has a circle of hockey friends, and a few of your guests now do, thanks to Hockey n’ Heels. Thank you sooo much :o)
Happy Hockey, everybody!!
